Fruit Fly Trap
The trap consists of three parts: a yellow-coloured base, a transucent dome to cover the base and a lure-holder in the dome. The trap is readied for use by filling the base with water, placing a bait in the holder and fitting the dome over the base. The cap should be screwed back after the bait has been placed inside. Suitable height of placement of the trap is 1.5 to 1.8 meters above ground level in midst crop foliage. The trap should be hung by plastic string or metalic wire.Adult Melon Fruit Flies are attracted to the bait and enter the trap through the circular opening at the centre of the base. After entering the trap, they hover inside the dome and around the bait. Trapped flies are attracted by light entering the dome and try to find an escape route in the direction of light. Trapped flies exhausted by crawling and flying inside the dome drown in water contained in the base. Drowned flies may be removed from water once a weekor when water is filled with dead flies. Flies trapped inside are intact and can be easily identified and counted. Water in the base should also be replenished once a week or if required more frequently, to restore water lost by evaporation.
